Mock Trial

The eighth graders were very fortunate to have participated in a Mock Trial this year. One of the parents is an attorney and donated quite a bit of his time to help the students understand how our justice system works. After 6 weeks of preparation for the mock trial, the students got to go to a local courthouse and have real judges preside over their case. Matthew was one of the defense attorneys and had to make the opening statement for the defense. Look how cute... Then the trial began. Witnesses were called, sworn in, directed and then cross examined. It was very excited to watch.

The jury left the room, and then came back in to give the verdict. 'Casey' was found to be not guilty. The Defense had won!!!

Just an aside, when the jury box wasn't full they invited some of the siblings that were there to sit in the jury box. After the jury filed back in the judge asked the foreperson of the jury to stand. It was the sister of the accused!! We all laughed and I am not sure the judge understood what we were laughing about, but that was okay. Thanks to Chris and Julie for all their time and dedication. It was a great experience for the students.
