The 135th Kentucky Derby was Saturday, May 2, 2009. Dan had been going to the Derby for years until 1994. We were on our honeymoon that year over Derby weekend. Then in 1995 we had guests visiting over Derby weekend, and so on. You can be sure that every year I heard about the fact that Dan wasn't going to the Derby. He had been collecting the Mint Julep glasses each year he went, and he even received a few as gifts (from me!). The kids love using them at dinner time because they list the winner of each year. "What year was Grama born?" one of them will say, and then they will look up the horse's name for that year. This could go on for 30 or more minutes. Then over the last year or so, several of the Derby glasses have broken and the cabinet was looking pretty empty. So this year, Dan was determined to go to the Derby. So determined that he got up at 4am on Saturday morning and headed out on his own. It was a full day and it sounds like he had a great time. He managed to 'scrounge' up a couple of glasses to bring home and fill up the cabinet a little bit. Hats off to you! I love you.
